Quick smarts and technical navigation. Urban campus and wilderness.
Night and day!
On Friday 22 March and Saturday 23 March 2013, we offer two Orienteering USA sanctioned events in the East Bay city of Pleasant
Hill. Friday will feature a Night Sprint, and Saturday, a Middle Distance race.
All About It!
Each of the two events will showcase a different type of terrain, and require
a different set of skills to navigate flawlessly—an exercise in contrasts. To
conquer both is a black-diamond-level achievement!
The Night Sprint will start just
after sunset. There is ample light on some parts of the campus; in others, you'll need a
headlamp. Four courses will be offered: separate courses for Men and Women, a shorter
Masters/Juniors course, and a beginner/intermediate course. These courses will earn Orienteering USA ranking
points on Blue/Red; Red; Green/Brown; and Orange/Yellow/White, respectively. The full
Orienteering USA class structure is offered on
these four courses for the purpose of results and ranking points, but awards will be given
as specified below.
The Middle Distance will
feature typical hilly Bay Area terrain, some trails, and lots of intricate vegetation of
all grades of passability. Route choice, while not as crucial as at the Sprint, can become
decisive. A full set of seven courses is on offer.
The event center will be at the Concord Road Runner Sports. The
event center will be open according to the
schedule. It will be most convenient to park at the store, and then carpool to the two
event venues.
Awards will be presented separately for each of the two events.
For the Night Sprint, awards will be given to the three men and women in the following
categories: Open on the Men's and the Women's courses;
Juniors (age 20 and under on 31 December 2013) on the
Masters/Juniors course; Masters (women age 40 and over and men
age 50 and over on 31 December 2013) on the Masters/Juniors course; and
Supervets (age 55 and over on 31 December 2013) on the
Masters/Juniors course. For the Middle, awards will be given to top three runners in each
of the standard age and gender classes.
Road Runner Sports offers
the world's largest selection of running and walking gear, the most caring
customer service, and prices sure to make you smile! With 26 stores
nationwide and a fantastic website you can always get what you need to stay
active any day of the week! Check-in and packet pickup will be available on the
day of the event at the Concord store. |

Friday's event will be a Sprint-format adventure run with interval starts. Four
courses will be offered, each eligible for Orienteering USA ranking points. Starts
will begin some 40 minutes after sunset. There is a lot of artificial light on
campus, but you will need a headlamp in order to be able to read the map in the darker
spots.
There is ample parking at DVC. Drive, carpool, or
run 3.5 km from Road Runner
Sports. We are required to park in Lot 8 (signs identify the
parking lots).

The Diablo
Valley College map was created by Ben Legg in January of 2009. It was
used once for a public event, our Sprint
Black Diamond in 2012 (Stage Two). The map was updated in March
of 2012 by Vladimir Gusiatnikov for Sprint Black Diamond, and will be
updated again in March of 2013 with the latest slate of changes. The map is
in ISSOM, 1:4,000, 10 ft. (3.0 meter) contours.
Hazards: None known. There will be very few people on campus
at this time on a Friday night besides us, so the risk of running into and
knocking someone over is very small.

Diablo Valley is a community college with
complex-geometry buildings, some of which encompass more than one level available for
running. Extreme care will be taken to set courses that present as little ambiguity as
possible. Take time to study your ISSOM map symbols!

Course designer's notes
These notes are from the our 2012
event. Most of them are correct, and we will keep you informed of all
updates.
There are a few unusual things, and a couple of reminders. Diablo Valley is a
multilevel campus. The International Standard for Sprint Maps rightly says that multilevel
structures cannot be adequately represented on a Sprint map. We'll have to work with a
representation that's as adequate as it can get!
Only the "main" running level is shown in detail. This is usually, but not
always, the lowest level that there is. In a number of places, it's difficult to say which
level is the main one; as you stay on the same level of a building or a walkway structure,
ground underneath you descends, and where's that point at which you aren't on the main
level anymore? There are several places at which we assumed a certain
"main"level, and showed the level below it with the tunnel symbol (in
less detail). Both of these levels can be used for running, usually in perpendicular
directions. The non-main level is accented with the purple 708.1 Crossing section symbol. So, solid purple lines
on this map show passageways along which you can go—not boundaries of
out-of-bounds areas.
There is exactly one area that is an exception to this rule, and the exception is that
it's the level above the lowest (main) level that's shown with the purple
passageway symbol. The upper level in this case is less intricate than the lower level,
so the lower level is assumed to be the main one, but the upper level is still important
for navigation. To summarize: The purple lines show where you can cross
above or below the main level, or, in a couple of cases, where you can change levels.
And now for the most important part: There are two area symbols that are absolutely
out of bounds. We had a problem with disregard for the 528.1 Area with forbidden access vegetation
at terraloco's SFSU event in 2009 that fortunately didn't end up costing us access to the
venue—but it could have. Please do not enter or cross the
yucky-green-color areas (you can, however, attempt to run through the usual dark green).
The other kind of areas you may not enter are construction areas shown in purple. They
are fenced out very well, and please don't climb these fences.
The Middle: Paso Nogal Park
Saturday's courses will be in the format of Middle Distance. A full slate of seven
standard courses will be offered, each eligible for Orienteering USA ranking points.
This event will be held at Paso Nogal Park rain or shine.
There will be ample parking at the venue.
Participants are still encouraged to carpool from Road Runner Sports. Alternatively, it is a 4.5 km
warmup jog.
|
The map of
Paso Nogal Park was created by Ben Legg in June of 2010 in ISSOM. It was
used once for a public event, our Sprint
Black Diamond in 2012 (Stage One), and it was used once afterwards for a
BAOC training event. The map was updated in March of 2012 by Ben Legg for
Sprint Black Diamond. For this year's event, we will expand the mapped area by a
factor of 2. The new area is west of Paso Nogal Road. It will be surveyed by
Vladimir Gusiatnikov, and the final product will be drafted into ISOM and printed
at 1:7,500. The map has 2.5 meter contours.
Hazards: There will be two crossings of a suburban road with
moderate vehicle traffic and some bike traffic. One of the crossings will be on
the way to the start, and the other one on the course. At least the latter will
be staffed throughout the event. Traffic will not stop; please pay careful
attention!
The park is a de-facto off-leash-dog area. However, it is likely that the park
will not be officially open to regular users at the time of the event, creating a
low-dog experience.
will be on site with
a wide variety of items on offer.

Paso Nogal is a mostly open, hilly suburban park with intricate vegetation, somewhat
similar to San Francisco's McLaren Park used by us in 2009 and 2011. Terrain/off-trail shoes are recommended.
Full leg cover is not necessary.

Course designer's notes
The event will not be cancelled because of rain. Besides two road
crossings, there are no other known hazards. Nothing about the
map or the course is unusual or worth a separate mention in the notes.
Travel and Accommodations
The closest airport is Oakland International. San Francisco and San José airports
are further away; Sacramento airport is another viable option. All three of the Bay Area
airports are amply served by public transit.
The directions to the event headquarters are here. A bike can help get you from BART to the HQ and between the HQ and the
venues!
Orienteering USA has negotiated discounted rates with its sponsor, Choice Hotels.
The closest Choice property is a Clarion Hotel in Concord, only 1.1 km (walking distance)
away from the event headquarters at Road Runner Sports. At the time of this writing,
members of Orienteering USA were offered rates as low as $84.15 per night, plus tax.
In order to obtain these rates, you must book through the Choice Hotels site and enter
Special Rate ID 00228560 in the "Select Rate" drop-down menu. Lower-priced
Choice properties are available throughout the Bay Area. By making your booking through
the website and referencing the Orienteering USA partnership code, you will be
supporting U.S. orienteering.
We recommend Hertz, an Orienteering USA partner, for car rentals. By booking
