Event ScheduleSaturday 17 March 201209:00 Check-in and packet pickup open, Road Runner Sports 10:30 First start, Stage One: Paso Nogal Park 13:30 First start, Stage Two: Diablo Valley College 15:30 Awards, Road Runner Sports Contrary to what was announced earlier, Stage One will be held at Paso Nogal Park rain or shine. Babysitting will not be offered at this event. Stage One: Paso Nogal ParkStage One will be a Sprint-format adventure run with interval starts. Four courses will be offered, each eligible for Orienteering USA ranking points. Contrary to a prior announcement, Stage One will be held at Paso Nogal Park rain or shine. Course designer's notesThe event will not be cancelled because of rain. Moreover, the park will not be officially open to regular users, creating a low-dog experience. There are no known hazards. Nothing about the map or the course is unusual or worth a separate mention in the notes. There will be ample street parking at the venue. Participants are still encouraged to carpool from Road Runner Sports. Alternatively, it is a 4.5 km warmup jog.
Paso Nogal is a mostly open, hilly suburban park with intricate vegetation, somewhat similar to San Francisco's McLaren Park used by us in 2009 and 2011. Terrain/off-trail shoes are recommended. Full leg cover is not necessary. Final course specifics

Four courses will be offered, each eligible for Orienteering USA ranking points. Course designer's notesThere are a few unusual things, and a couple of reminders. Diablo Valley is a multilevel campus. The International Standard for Sprint Maps rightly says that multilevel structures cannot be adequately represented on a Sprint map. We'll have to work with a representation that's as adequate as it can get! Only the "main" running level is shown in detail. This is usually, but not always, the lowest level that there is. In a number of places, it's difficult to say which level is the main one; as you stay on the same level of a building or a walkway structure, ground underneath you descends, and where's that point at which you aren't on the main level anymore? There are several places at which we assumed a certain "main"level, and showed the level below it with the tunnel symbol (in less detail). Both of these levels can be used for running, usually in perpendicular directions. The non-main level is accented with the purple 708.1 Crossing section symbol. So, solid purple lines on this map show passageways along which you can go—not boundaries of out-of-bounds areas. There is exactly one area that is an exception to this rule, and the exception is that it's the level above the lowest (main) level that's shown with the purple passageway symbol. The upper level in this case is less intricate than the lower level, so the lower level is assumed to be the main one, but the upper level is still important for navigation. To summarize: The purple lines show where you can cross above or below the main level, or, in a couple of cases, where you can change levels. And now for the most important part: There are two area symbols that are absolutely out of bounds. We had a problem with disregard for the 528.1 Area with forbidden access vegetation at terraloco's SFSU event in 2009 that fortunately didn't end up costing us access to the venue—but it could have. Please do not enter or cross the yucky-green-color areas (you can, however, attempt to run through the usual dark green). The other kind of areas you may not enter are construction areas shown in purple. They are fenced out very well, and please don't climb these fences. There is ample parking at DVC. Drive or carpool from Road Runner Sports, run 2.5 km from Paso Nogal, or run 3.5 km from RRS. We are required to park in Lot 8 (signs identify the parking lots).
Diablo Valley is a community college with complex-geometry buildings, some of which encompass more than one level available for running. Extreme care will be taken to set courses that present as little ambiguity as possible. Take time to study your ISSOM map symbols! Final course specifics

A bike can help get you from BART to the HQ and between the HQ and the venues! Orienteering USA has negotiated discounted rates with its sponsor, Motel 6. The closest Motel 6 property is in Concord (there is a closer Studio 6 but the discount only applies to Motel 6 proper). At the time of this writing, members of Orienteering USA were offered rates as low as $59.39 per night, plus tax. In order to obtain these rates, you must book through the Motel 6/Orienteering USA partnership program. By making your booking through this website, you will be supporting U.S. orienteering. We recommend Hertz, an Orienteering USA partner, for car rentals. By booking through this link, you will be supporting U.S. orienteering. Our discount code will be displayed on the reservations page. The fees for each Sprint are:
There is a single recreational (non-competitive) category offered, the Map Hike, on the Beginner/Intermediate course. The Map Hike is suitable for juniors and for adults. Enter the event and select "Map Hike" as your Orienteering USA category on the second registration screen. The price for the Map Hike is the same as listed above, per person. Discounts!!Orienteering USA is offering 50% off entry fees, up to $20, for first-time A event attendees. If you have never participated in a national-level orienteering A event, simply print out the coupon, have it endorsed by us at the event, and mail it in. This is a rebate—you will pay the regular entry fee during our registration process. For each Sprint, there is a $5 Orienteering USA/national Federation discount. In addition, any member of an orienteering club anywhere in the world may take $5 off each race ($10 off the day's fees). And on top of these discounts, BAOC members can take yet another $5 off, for a total discount of $10 off each Sprint's fees. For example, the early price for an adult who is both a BAOC and Orienteering USA member is $24 for each race, $48 for the day; a junior who is a member of both can get two ranking days for as low as $18. So, why not join Orienteering USA? SPORTident electronic tag rental is included in the above prices. Extras!!
